India will do all it can to end the war through dialogue and diplomacy and help ameliorate the pain and suffering of the Ukrainian people, PM Narendra Modi told Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in their first bilateral meeting since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Modi assured Zelensky of continued humanitarian aid from India in the meeting that was sought by the Ukraine president.
Modi also told Zelenskyy that the latter understood the pain of war better than anyone else and that what’s happening in Ukraine was not a political or an economic issue but an issue of humanity and human values. Zelenskyy again invited Modi to join the implementation of the Ukraine Peace Formula. “I want to assure you that India, and I in my personal capacity, would do whatever we can to resolve the situation,” Modi said.

Zelenskyy not invited for G20 meet, confirms foreign secy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and promised continued humanitarian aid. “The Ukraine war is a very big issue for the entire world. It has affected the world in many ways. Last year when our kids returned, the way they explained the situation in Ukraine I could understand your anguish and the sufferings of the Ukrainian people,” PM Modi in his public remarks to the Ukrainian president.
The meeting took place on the margins of the Hiroshima G7 summit, which unveiled fresh sanctions against Russia. While Zelenskyy also invited Modi to visit Ukraine, foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra confirmed after the meeting the Ukrainian president wasn’t invited by PM Modi for the G20 summit that India will host in September. He said there was no discussion on that issue in the meeting.
Zelenskyy thanked Modi for supporting “our country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, in particular, at the platforms of international organisations, and for providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine”.
According to Kwatra, while expressing concerns about the war, Modi spoke about the wider impact of the conflict on the developing world, including economic insecurities in the form of food, fuel and fertiliser shortages.
“The Prime Minister appreciated Ukraine’s cooperation in the safe evacuation of Indian students and welcomed the decision by Ukrainian institutions to hold examination in India for the students. The PM conveyed India’s clear support for dialogue and diplomacy to find a way forward. He said that for a resolution of the situation, India and the PM personally would do everything within our means,” said the Indian government in its readout of the meeting.
PM Modi had in the past too told Zelenskyy that India remained ready to support any peace initiative.
While the two leaders had spoken on several occasions on phone in the past 15 months, this was their first in-person meeting since they last met on the sidelines of the Glasgow climate conference in 2021. According to the government, Zelenskyy briefed Modi about the situation in Ukraine and the two leaders agreed to remain in touch.
