Los Angeles тАУ Yuka Saso won her first major title before earning her LPGA Tour card.
Now that she has both under her belt, courtesy of her win at the U.S. WomenтАЩs Open earlier this month, Saso тАФ who just turned 20 on Sunday тАФ is approaching the next major with a fresh mindset.
тАЬI donтАЩt really expect anything,тАЭ Saso said Wednesday, on the eve of the KPMG WomenтАЩs PGA Championship. тАЬIтАЩm just more focusing on what I have to do with my game.
тАЬIтАЩm trying to improve every day to be a better golfer, to be a better person.тАЭ
Saso earned her LPGA Tour card with the victory at the Olympic Club. She has not played in the past two LPGA events, but did take a trip to San Diego for the U.S. Open.
ThatтАЩs where Saso got to meet Phil Mickelson and her idol Rory McIlroy, who she has modeled her swing after. She now has her own video of McIlroyтАЩs swing after walking three holes with him at Torrey Pines.
Saso said she has not counted how many times she has watched the video, but said itтАЩs тАЬa lot.тАЭ
тАЬHe was very nice, and all the questions that I had, he answered me with honesty, and I think he was very sincere,тАЭ she said. тАЬAnd so, yeah, I was very happy that I was able to meet him.тАЭ
Saso said she got to sleep with the U.S. WomenтАЩs Open trophy for a night before returning it to the United States Golf Association to have her name engraved on it.
Her focus is now back on the golf course and how to attack the Atlanta Athletic Club in what Saso expects to be hot and humid conditions. ItтАЩs a good test for the tourтАЩs most recent major winner as the former Japan LPGA star transitions to playing more regularly in the United States.
тАЬI think IтАЩm more focused now on playing here and I think improving my game more, learn from the best golfers here in the LPGA,тАЭ Saso said. тАЬI think it doesnтАЩt stop there, so IтАЩll just focus on whatтАЩs next for me and keep going.тАЭ
