Yoga guru Ramdev stokes controversy with remarks on women | India News

NEW DELHI: Yoga Guru Ramdev finds himself in controversy again, following his comments about women at a public function.
Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal, while posting a snippet of Ramdev’s speech on Twitter, said the remarks are undignified and condemnable, and have hurt the feelings of all women. She also demanded an apology from the yoga guru.
In the video clip, Ramdev is seen sharing the stage with Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, at a public event.

With a chuckle in his voice, referring to the women at the gathering Ramdev says, “Women look great in saree. The ones seated in front have had a chance to wear saree. Those at the back were not so fortunate.”
Then, with a gesture pointing to the deputy CM’s wife, he says “You also look good in salwar suit, like Amruta ji.”
The he adds, “Like me, even if you don’t wear, then too you look good.”
He goes on to add that clothing is an accepted societal custom.
“We roamed around without clothes till we were 8 or 10. Only now, children are made to wear 4-5 layers of clothing.”
Ramdev’s remarks have drawn criticism from several quarters.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra took a dig at Ramdev, citing a 2012 incident when Ramved purportedly attempted to evade the police and flee from a gathering at Delhi’s ram Leela Maidan in women’s clothes.
