A 23-year-old woman was accidentally given six doses of a Covid jab by a health worker, it has been reported.
The unnamed woman, a student, was kept in hospital for 24 hours after the terrifying blunder but is said to have suffered no adverse effects.
The woman was given the massive dose of the Pfizer vaccine at the Noa hospital in Tuscany, central Italy, on Sunday, hospital spokeswoman Daniella Gianelli told CNN.
The patient, who was described as being in “good health” with no underlying conditions, was kept at the hospital under observation for 24 hours before being discharged yesterday, Daniella said.
A health worker accidentally filled a syringe with a whole bottle of the vaccine, which contains six doses, and only realised her mistake shortly after the jab was injected, it has been reported.
“She saw five empty syringes and realised her mistake,” Daniella said.
Doctors will continue to monitor the patient’s immune response to the “massive dose of vaccine,” the spokeswoman added.
Dr Antonella Vicenti, director of infectious diseases at Noa Hospital, told CBS that the woman had not suffered any side effects from the huge dose she was given.
“The patient did not have fever and did not have any pain except for pain at the inoculation site, nor any other manifestations,” Dr Vincenti said.
“She was a bit frightened, thus we preferred to keep her here until this morning.”
Dr. Tommaso Bellandi, director of patient security for the northwest Tuscany health authority, reportedly said the accident happened because the nurse had an attention lapse.
An internal investigation has been opened, a hospital spokesperson said, adding that it was “maybe just human error, definitively not on purpose”.
