Adolescence creators drop major hint

Despite its widespread acclaim, the show’s creators, Stephen Graham and his wife Hannah Walters, had not anticipated such an explosive response to their four-part series. They spoke about the show’s impact in an interview with Variety.

Initially conceived as a standalone project, it’s believed that Netflix has already expressed interest in a follow-up installment. Stephen and Hannah don’t deny this but emphasize that no official plans have been confirmed. Even if a second part gets a go ahead, it will narrate another story and not revisit the same world.

“Possibly, let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story,” says Stephen.

That being said, Hannah asserts that she would be happy to work with Netflix again, but it is hard to follow up on something that has had such a global impact.

She shares, “A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen. But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else. But yeah, everything’s looking good … everyone’s happy, shall we say?”

About Adolescence

Adolescence is a four-part limited series starring Stephen Graham and newcomer Owen Cooper. It received rave reviews upon release last week and has taken social media by storm. The four-episode series, directed by Philip Barantini, was released on Netflix on March 13 and went on to claim the No. 1 spot worldwide

Co-created and written by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, Adolescence tells the story of a family torn apart after 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a girl in her school. The show explores casual misogyny and the influence of social media on the youth of this generation. Each scene is shot in one take, which is being applauded by all.

In the UK, Adolescence shattered records by becoming the very first streaming show to top weekly ratings. Globally, the show opened with a massive 24.3 million views in its first four days, it then climbed to 66.3 million after two weeks. In India, the show sparked a debate about the feasibility of creating a similar project, raising questions about the country’s creative freedom landscape.
