There are two types of merging on Australian roads — the lane merge and the zip merge.
But the rules are different for each which came as a surprise, and even angered some Facebook users.
According to Queensland government advice, on roads where there are lanes marked on the road – if your lane comes to an end, you must give way to traffic already in the lane you are moving to.
In the example on the left, the red car must give way to the green car.
On roads where there are no lanes marked on the road – when lines of traffic merge, you must give way to any vehicle that is ahead of you.
In the example on the right, blue car must give way to the yellow car.
