Where you can still buy a house for under $50,000 in QLD

There is no denying that the property market has gone nuts, but if you have a good imagination and are willing to roll up your sleeves and put in some sweat equity, you can still buy a house in Queensland for less than the price of a new car.

And judging by how fast some of the state’s cheapest properties are being snapped up, it would seem there are plenty of willing buyers who don’t fear a clanger.

A “rough and ready” house listed for $32,000 in Wowan – a rural town with a population of around 200 southwest of Rockhampton – is already under offer.

On a 1523 sqm block, the generous listing description says the house has three bedrooms, a lounge, a sleep-out and an open plan kitchen and dining area with a built-in pantry.

In Hughenden, a “solid timber home with strong bones” sold for $27,000 in December after it was listed for $30,000 by the Public Trustee.

On a 1057 sqm block in a “good residential area”, it features timber floors and sizeable rooms, plus there is a garden shed and an open car port.

On the market for $35,000, the house on this 2023 sqm block at Aramac, a rural town near Longreach, wasn’t even mentioned in the listing.

“Renovate or Detonate – Massive Block” the listing headline screamed.

And the internal pictures lean in favour of detonate, but the external image suggests there may be hope for this bargain yet.

“An opportunity not to be missed! This large 2023sq m allotment is situated in an ideal location as in within walking distance to everything,” the listing says. That’s it.

Now under offer, this house in Dirranbandi, a rural town near St George, was listed for $45,000 by the Department of Housing and Public Works.

On a 1012 sqm block, the weatherboard house has three bedrooms, an open plan kitchen and a dining room, an office, verandas, a laundry and airconditioning.

In Cunnamulla, a two bedroom house on a 1012 sqm block is listed for $49,900 – less than the price of a new Volvo.

And in Barcaldine, a timber Queenslander on a 1752 sqm block was listed for $50,000 just last week, and is also now under offer.

Okay, this one isn’t a house but it is on an island frequented by tourists.

Listed for $35,000, this studio unit at Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island is just 40sq m but is located in Amaroo on Mandalay, a resort-style complex with a pool, two tennis courts, a playground, restaurant, bar and a fitness and barbecue.

The unit also comes fully-furnished and while you can’t stay for more than three months at one time, it could be the perfect winter escape.

It is also only 700m to the Nelly Bay beach front, supermarkets, gift shops, chemist, bottle shop and cafes.

What this studio unit lacks in space is made up by the shared amenities within the complex

It is a cheap holiday home option
