Rob and Jenni Edwards bought the land in 1989 and built their dream family home the following year.

“I’m born and bred in Kangaroo Island and we bought a house in Darlington with the view of moving to acreage in the future and then this place came up three or four years into that and we pulled up out front and said ‘well, I guess we’re moving’,” Mr Edwards said.

“That was it. We just loved the rural aspect and the birds. I had an earthmoving business back then so I spent a lot of time up there every weekend getting the place sorted because we started from scratch. The location and outlook is incredible. We look down the valley over Blackwood Park and then West Beach and on a sunny morning you can see the silos across the gulf at Ardrossan.”

The federation-style home has four bedrooms, a central open-plan kitchen, dining and living area offering breathtaking views, and a double garage with a spacious cellar.

“We have twin daughters and we built it to work for our family,” Mr Edwards says. “The kitchen and living area is where we spend most of our time and we built it so that we could have our friends in one area of the house and the kids could do their own thing in another area.

“We’ve done a lot of entertaining here and on Easter Sunday we had 26 people up here – they all come up from the lowlands and just love it.”

Outside, the property has a range of sheds, plus several shipping containers for extra storage, a solar system, a stable and horse yard, fully fenced paddocks with quality fencing, 22,000 gallons of rainwater storage and a solar pump to spring-fed dams, and landscaped gardens with an automatic irrigation system.

“We usually run six or seven cattle to keep the grass down, we have six sheep that eat around the house and we had horses – a Clydesdale and a miniature,” Mr Edwards says. “It’s a perfect small farm property and the perfect family home.”

With the kids having moved out, the time has come to downsize and travel, Mr Edwards says.

“We’ve absolutely loved it here but Jen and I want to do the grey nomad thing now,” he says. “We’ve had 30 years of enjoyment here and we’ll never lose those memories. We’ve loved it here.”
