‘Vettaiyan’ Prevue Review: It’s Rajinikanth vs Amitabh Bachchan in a Moral Battle for Encounter Killings in This TJ Gnanavel Entertainer (Watch Video)
For those unaware, Amitabh Bachchan is making his Tamil debut in TJ Gnanavel’s Vettaiyan, where he shares the screen with his dear friend Rajinikanth after many years. The two have previously worked together in Hindi films such as Geraftaar, Andha Kanoon, and Hum. Rajinikanth plays a renowned and revered encounter specialist in the Tamil Nadu police department, while Amitabh Bachchan portrays Sathyadev, an official who questions his methods, as seen in the latest promo. Fans eager to hear Amitabh Bachchan speaking in Tamil might be disappointed to learn that his voice has been dubbed by National Award-winning actor Prakash Raj in the Tamil version.
Though the trailer highlights Rajinikanth’s swagger, amplified by Anirudh’s “Hunter Vantaar” song, it doesn’t reveal the name of his character. What is clear is that his character is loved by the department for his extra-judicial killings of criminals, a stance that Amitabh Bachchan’s Sathyadev strongly opposes. The final shot of them glaring at each other foreshadows a significant ideological clash.

The Vettaiyan prevue isn’t limited to these two legends. It also offers glimpses of a star-studded cast, including Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, Rohini, Abhirami, Kishore, and Rao Ramesh. Interestingly, TJ Gnanavel’s previous film, the powerful Suriya-starrer Jai Bhim, criticised police brutality and third-degree torture methods. It will be intriguing to see how he approaches the subject of law enforcement in Vettaiyan, potentially even glorifying the controversial practice of encounter killings. We’ll have to wait until Vettaiyan hits theatres on October 10 to find out.
