Uttar Pradesh: Retired Soldier Awarded 10 Years in Jail and INR 5 Lakh Fine for Killing Woman During Celebratory Firing at Wedding in Kanpur

Kanpur, July 31: A man in Kanpur has been awarded 10  years of Jail for killing a woman during a celebratory firing. Reportedly, the bullet hit the victim during the welcoming of a marriage procession. She died in the hospital during the treatment. The Additional District and Sessions Judge also imposed a fine of INR 5.2 lakh on the accused for causing death due to negligence. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two-year prison term.

Moreover, the court has decided to give fifty per cent of the fine to the deceased, Rashmi Dixit’s children. The accused, Ajay Kumar Dixit, is a retired soldier, and he is expected to be cautious with firearms. According to ADGC Dharmendra Pal Singh, Jia Lal, a guard in Naugaon village, reported that on February 8, 2021, during the marriage of Ankit and Priya at Jai Prayag marriage lawn, an unidentified individual engaged in celebratory firing while welcoming the ‘baraat‘ (marriage procession). A stray bullet struck Rashmi, wife of Pankaj Dixit, who later died in the hospital during treatment. Following the incident, Ajay Kumar was arrested, and the police also found two revolvers during the incident. The prosecution witness testified that he had warned Ajay Kumar Dixit to stop firing, as it could harm someone, but Dixit continued, and one of the bullets struck Rashmi Dixit, who was dancing near the stage. During sentencing, the defence argued that the accused, a retired Army man, did not intend to cause harm and should receive the minimum sentence. In contrast, the prosecution stated that the woman’s death was a result of the accused’s deliberate negligence and demanded the maximum sentence.
