In a major crackdown, police officers were caught extorting money at the UP-Bihar border in Ballia. They were facilitating the illegal passage of trucks carrying liquor, cattle, and sand. Acting on a tip-off, ADG Varanasi, Piyush Mordia, conducted a midnight raid on Wednesday with an STF team in civilian attire. They caught three officers red-handed and arrested 17 civilians, while the Narhi SHO and several other policemen fled. ADG Mordia immediately suspended the SHO, Panne Lal, and all seven officers of Korontadih outpost, filing FIRs against them. DIG Azamgarh, Vaibhav Krishna, revealed that around 1,000 trucks passed through the entry-exit point daily, with each paying INR 500, amassing INR 5 lakh in daily bribes. The raid uncovered INR 37,500, 14 bikes, 50 mobile phones, and extortion registers. The crackdown has exposed the rampant corruption and led to significant traffic jams on the Purvanchal Expressway.
