A baby girl was saved by medics who performed a caesarean delivery after her mum died from a cobra bite.

The newborn’s mum was declared dead when she arrived at the Diffun District Hospital, in the Quirino province of the Philippines, on the morning of August 4.

However medics found the baby still had signs of life but was weak due to the venom.

They performed an emergency caesarean operation which took almost an hour.

The baby, who was due next month, was safely removed and is now recovering in neonatal intensive care.

A hospital spokesman said: “A pregnant mother who was bitten by a venomous snake was taken here with no signs of life and cyanotic, hence, declared dead on arrival.

“On his assessment, Dr Moises Lazaro, the chief of hospital opted for immediate post-mortem caesarean wherein the baby was about to die. At last, the baby was successfully revived.”

The baby is now in stable condition and was transferred to a bigger provincial hospital where she was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit as she was born one month prematurely.

As the baby received care at the hospital, heartbroken family members arranged the funeral for the mother.

The Philippine cobra is regarded as the most deadly cobra in the world.

It is also the third most dangerous snake in the world as it could spit its venom with an accuracy of up to three metres.
