The Ukrainian government now has a fleet of 50 Chevrolet Tahoes and 50 Ford Rangers to help transport its citizens out of danger, thanks to donations from their manufacturers.
General Motors gave the full-size SUVs to the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure in response to a request from the country’s embassy in Washington, GM spokesman George Svigos told the Detroit Free Press.
GM “swung into action, overcame obstacles and moved at speed to get these much-needed vehicles to the Ukraine government for humanitarian work,” Svigos wrote on LinkedIn.
The Tahoes were not taken from inventory destined for U.S. dealerships. They were sent into Ukraine through a Polish military logistics hub, then delivered over the border by Polish authorities.
Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley tweeted last week that the company sent 50 Rangers to Ukraine.
The shipping company Maersk partnered with GM and Ford to transport the vehicles for free.
GM and Ford also have each made six-figure monetary donations toward humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Stellantis in March said it was giving $1.1 million to Ukrainian relief efforts.
