NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday told the Delhi high court it will consult stakeholders on the the issue of formulating a uniform civil code after it receives the Law Commission’s report on the issue.
In May 2019, the court had sought the Centre’s response on lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay’s petition seeking constitution of a judicial commission to draft a UCC to promote national integration, and gender justice and equality.
The Centre told the court the issue is important and required an in-depth study of various personal laws.It also said the petition is not maintainable as formulation of the UCC is a “matter of policy” that has to be decided by the “elected representatives of the people” and “no direction can be issued on this regard”.
Besides Upadhyay’s petition, there are four others that have contended that India “urgently needs a Uniform Civil Code”.
