It’s understood Alaruh, two, was attacked by the large dog just after 1.30pm at a Camilla Avenue home in Osborne.
The dog, called Joop, has been seized by Port Adelaide Enfield Council workers.
The family surrendered the dog willingly.
The girl’s father is believed to have come across the attack on his daughter and pulled the dog away.
Neighbour Anthony Dear heard the commotion and said the father was “freaking out a bit”.
Dear said he grabbed Joop and took him in.
“It was fine with me and I’ve never met the dog before,” he said.
The child was taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries to her face.
An investigation is underway.
