‘Tumbbad’ Re-Release Box Office Verdict – Hit or Flop: Sohum Shah’s Horror Film Has Eclipsed Lifetime Collections of These Movies of Ajay Devgn, John Abraham, Janhvi Kapoor in 2024!

For some reason, Bollywood has avoided bringing out any major Hindi movie releases since the three-way clash between Stree 2, Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein on August 15. Save for The Buckingham Murders and Yudhra, to some extent, nearly one and a half months went by with no biggies in theatres. The paucity gave Stree 2 an uninterrupted run at the box office, with the horror-comedy entering INR 600 crore club with ease. Also, the field was open for producers to release old, cult Hindi movies in theatres again, and some of them are making a killing in their second innings. Tumbbad, starring Sohum Shah (also one of its producers), was originally released in theatres on October 12, 2018. The period fantasy horror movie opened to highly positive reviews, with critics praising the direction, the production design, and the performances. However, despite the positive acclaim, Tumbbad opened slowly in theatres. Even though those who watched the film loved it, the strong word-of-mouth campaign didn’t translate into enough footfalls. As per Bollywood Hungama, Tumbbad netted INR 13.57 crore in India back in 2018.

However, perhaps the audience felt bad about not giving what is claimed to be India’s best horror movie its due at the box office, so when Tumbbad was released in theatres again on September 13, 2024, the movie did considerably better than its original run. After finishing with its second weekend, Tumbbad has collected INR 21.57 crore and is still going strong.

With these net earnings, Tumbbad has also managed to eclipse the lifetime earnings of some of the major Hindi movie releases of 2024 in India with just its re-release collections, a few of them starring major names like Ajay Devgn, John Abraham, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vidyut Jammwal, Janhvi Kapoor et al. ‘Tumbbad’ Movie Review: Sohum Shah and Rahi Anil Barve’s Fantasy-Horror Film Is a Macabre Masterpiece!
