Trump picks businessman George Glass as Japan ambassador

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has chosen businessman George Glass to be ambassador to Japan as he continues to stack his administration with officials who have espoused hawkish views toward China.

“I am pleased to announce George Edward Glass as our next United States Ambassador to Japan,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. “As a former President of an Investment Bank, George will bring his business acumen to the Ambassador’s position.”

Glass, who served as ambassador to Portugal from 2017 to 2021 during Trump’s first administration, criticized China’s growing involvement in Portugal’s strategic infrastructure, singling out telecoms giant Huawei Technologies’ bid to develop the European country’s communications networks.
