Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The traders here have joined the public in opposing the incineration of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) waste in Pithampur.
They argue that if this waste is not toxic, why can it not be incinerated in Mandideep industrial area in place of Pithampur industrial area. Ramesh Khandelwal, president of Ahilya Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said in a statement on Friday that the UCC waste was brought to Pithampur from Bhopal at a whopping transportation cost for its incineration.
The lobby concerned was assuring that now all its poisonous elements had been destroyed and the possibility of any ill-effects from burning it was negligible. When there was no harm in burning this waste, then why was it not taken to Mandideep near Bhopal, he asked.
Why was it sent from Bhopal to Pithampur, a town close to the city, after spending so much, he questioned. He said It was an undisputed truth that this waste contained heavy metals like lead and mercury, which never got destroyed and were cancer-causing and fatal.
Khandelwal said that the Ahilya Chamber of Commerce strongly opposed the burning of this waste in Pithampur and appealed to all the public representatives of the city to protest against it.
If this incineration was not stopped, keeping in mind its harmful effects on the city and its nearby areas, then the Ahilya Chambers would call a meeting of all tradersтАЩ associations to decide the next course of action.
