NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Santanu Sen on Thursday accused Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri of “physically threatening and abusing him in filthy language” on the floor of Rajya Sabha soon after the House was adjourned and deputy chairperson Harivansh on Thursday.
Sen had snatched away papers from the hands of IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and tore them up within minutes of his attempt at making a statement in the House on the Pegasus snooping issue.
“He was about to assault me, he threatened me, used filthy language. I was gheraoed (surrounded) by Puri and other members from the treasury benches… this is very unfortunate,” Sen later told the media.
TMC chief whip Sukhendu Sekhar Roy said that the party has complained to the deputy chairperson on the matter. Roy added that when the House reassembled at 2pm the IT minister was reading out “from a statement on Pegasus issue that was full of contradictions and white lies. So, one of our members snatched the paper away from his hands. After the House adjourned, following the ruckus, the minister (Puri) gesticulated rudely at Sen and called him names. This is absolutely unprecedented,” said Roy.
After Sen tore up the papers, TMC, Congress and other opposition party members, who had earlier forced two adjournments in Rajya Sabha, rushed into the well of the House as Vaishnaw was called to make his statement.
This stopped the minister from making the statement and he said he was laying a copy of it on the table of the House.
Deputy chairman Harivansh asked members to desist from unparliamentary behaviour, before adjourning the proceedings of the House for the day.
