‘Dil Dariya’ – One of Shah Rukh Khan’s First Shows
Dil Dariya was a 1988 TV serial directed by the legendary Lekh Tandon. It features Shah Rukh Khan in one of his earliest roles, as Fauji and Dil Dariya were both released in the same year. Lekh Tandon is often credited with ‘discovering’ Shah Rukh Khan for television. The show also starred the late Virendra Saxena, Jayshree Arora, Vineeta Malik, and Arun Bali.
Dil Dariya revolved around two families and the tensions between them due to personal conflicts. Shah Rukh Khan played Nandkishore, aka Nandu, the son of a garment shopkeeper with exceptional sales skills. Alka Amin played his wife, Kantha, in the show. Back then, she was known as Alka Saxena. Interestingly, in real life, Alka is four years older than her co-star. Dil Dariya aired on Doordarshan. You could actually say she was Shah Rukh Khan’s first heroine, considering this was the first show he had signed.
