MEERUT: A panchayat in Sardhana ordered that a man, 60, be beaten up with shoes and expelled after he was accused of molesting a minor in his village. Police were informed only after the “verdict” had been passed.
On Monday, the parents of the girl, 11, from Chandna village were away working in the fields. The man, Raj Kumar, their neighbour, snuck in and, finding her alone, molested her. Someone chanced upon him and he was caught. But soon, the controversy turned into one about identity — the two were from different castes and each community backed its own member. Police arrived and diffused the tension for the day, a local source said. The accused has also been booked.
