The Matrix Trivia: Learn How the Iconic Code For Keanu Reeves’ Classic Sci-Fi Film Originated From a Sushi Recipe!

The Matrix changed cinema when it came out. Filled with great visuals that left child me saying “woah”, The Matrix has become a really huge part of pop culture. Filled with amazing sequences like the bullet time scene, The Matrix was a pretty huge deal. You have characters like Neo, Agent Smith and Morpheus who are extremely iconic and then on top of that a very innovative and original story, it has all the makings of a blockbuster. The Matrix Resurrections: New Clip Shows Keanu Reeves’ Neo Meet a Young Morpheus and Visit His Past!

While The Matrix is known for its amazing action and characters, perhaps the most recognisable visual of it has to be the Matrix code. Called the Digital Rain, the code represents the Matrix itself. Every film opens with this code like how every Star Wars film opens with the opening crawl. The code is depicted in Japanese letters and shown in a downward spiral. It is basically the way of representing the activity of simulated reality of the Matrix.

While yeah the wordings in it are in Japanese, that’s not exactly where the inspiration ends. In an interview with CNET, the Matrix code creator, Simon Whitely, revealed that the code actually consists of sushi recipes. Surely a hilarious way to reveal exactly how one of Hollywood’s most iconic visuals was created.  An article by Wired as well goes very much in depth with this.

The Wachowskis would bring in Simon and ask him to create the code. They wanted something that was more Japanese or Anime inspired. He started reading Japanese texts to gain inspiration. His wife being from Japan, he would borrow one of her cookbooks and one particular recipe caught his eye. He would scan the recipe and design the code. The Matrix Resurrections Trailer 2: Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss Seek Each Other Out in This Action-Packed Promo; Priyanka Chopra Reveals Neo’s Fate (Watch Video).

It really puts things into perspective when you think about it. One of the most iconic scenes in Hollywood, and it originated from a cooking book. It’s hilarious but at the same time very interesting as well.

Although to the fans who were looking to cook some delicious sushi out of the code, well sorry to disappoint you, that’s not possible. Since the recipe was converted into code, you won’t be able to make the dish out of it, since sushi is written in a different format.

Here is hoping that The Matrix Resurrections also opens with the iconic digital rain. It will surely be fun to see the sushi recipe back on screen again. The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled to release on December 22, 2021.
