First Home

I bought my first home at St Andrews Beach via private sale in 1975. The home was in an old housing estate that was built in the 1960s. I liked that it was close to the surf, so that was a winner. The houses in that area at the time were also cheap enough for a young surfer like me to afford. It was also a fairly easy commute from home to the Peninsula Surf Centre shop I’d opened in Frankston. I was also doing radio surf reports on 3XY at the time, and there was a big vacant block at the back of the estate where a helicopter would sometimes land to pick me up for work. My wife, Jane, and I ended up selling the home to move to Rye because we wanted to start a family and needed a bigger home. We also wanted to be within easier reach of Frankston and Melbourne.

Current Home

We decided to sell our current home at 31-33 White Cliffs Road in Rye this year. We’ve owned it for about 30 years and we listed it at the start of April. The place is filled with great memories, we raised our three children in that house. I love the big one acre (4300sq m) blocks in the area, which give you privacy from your neighbours. It’s also close to the beach so I can surf, and the view from our deck is gorgeous. The home was built by a surfing mate of mine, Rod Sly, who was also a skilled builder. It’s been a great spot to host gatherings, and we had an afterparty there following my daughter’s wedding with a jumping castle in the yard for the kids.

The kitchen has been updated over the years.

Dream Home

Somewhere I can surf. Jane and I are planning to move to Queensland, where the water is warmer and kinder to an older surfer’s body. We’ve got our eye set on the Currumbin Alley, which has a great vibe, great surf and is close enough to the airport so we can easily fly back to Melbourne to visit the kids and grandkids. My dream home would overlook the Pacific Ocean and be close enough to the sand so I can wander down with my board under my arm. We want a main bedroom with a view of the water, as well as a workshop for me, a sewing room for Jane, and space for guests to stay. I also like to imagine the home would have a beachy, Hamptons-style feel to it, as well as a small garden that’s easy to look after.
