A supermarket cashier has been heaped with praise after he stepped in to pay for an elderly customer’s food shop – and she never even knew he did it
A supermarket shopper says she was almost brought to tears after watching a cashier’s incredible act of kindness when an elderly customer’s card got declined.
A woman named Lyn shared the story on Facebook, explaining she was shopping at Australian supermarket chain Coles and was in the queue for the till when the customer in front was having issues with her payment.
She said the elderly shopper had become confused when her card was declined, and the young member of staff behind the till reassured her that he would “fix” the problem.
But rather than calling for help or checking the machine was working, he simply took his phone out of his pocket and paid the bill for the shop, which cost £39 ($73).

Lyn said the customer he had helped just thought he had fixed the machine and didn’t realise he had paid for her shopping – but he looked for no acknowledgement or thanks for what he had actually done, as reported by News.com.au.
She wanted to make sure Coles knew about their member of staff’s incredible gesture, and posted on the store’s official Facebook page to say: “While waiting in line at my local Coles supermarket, the elderly lady in front of me was having trouble paying with her debit card.
“It declined twice and she was confused at why it wasn’t working. A beautiful young boy working on the check out told her it’s OK, ‘I’ll fix it for you’, and proceeded to pay for it using his own phone to access his account.”
Lyn said she told the store’s supervisor about the incident and added: “I wanted to cry at witnessing the absolute care and generosity of a fabulous young man called Michael.
“I assured him good things are coming his way in life. It warmed my cold heart.”
One person replied to say: “What a beautiful young man. His parents should be so proud.”
And it appears the kind act wasn’t out of character for Michael, as another Coles worker commented: “Reading through this I was thinking it was Michael, then saw his name. He is a lovely young man and he is an asset to our store. I will be giving him a praise up!”
