Sun halo spotted in Prayagraj leaves many awe-inspired. Here’s what it is

The skies of Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj were graced by an awe-inspiring phenomenon on Friday. Sun halo or the “22 degree halo” was seen in the city by many. The mysterious ring was seen for a few hours.

Theory says that this ring is formed as a result of the dispersion of light. The sun halo occurs when sunlight interacts with ice crystals in the atmosphere.

These icy crystals, which are found in cirrus clouds, are thin and wispy. When sunlight enters these ice crystals, it is refracted. This bending of light causes the sun’s rays to separate into many colours, creating a spectrum. It then appears as what we call “sun halo.”

Here’s how the sun halo was captured on Friday.

Earlier, sun halos were spotted in different parts of the country including Dehradun, Kerala and Bengaluru.

Last year, many people captured the sun halo in Dehradun.

However, experts say that people must exercise caution while taking pictures of sun halos as facing the sun directly can harm your eyes.
