Study Shows Decline In Alcohol Consumption Among Indian Men, Here’s Why

The buzz around Indian men consuming less alcohol is everywhere, and several studies from the past have highlighted this significant shift in drinking behaviour. With growing awareness of the health risks and changing societal perceptions, the declining numbers emphasise drinking habits across the country. Keep reading as we delve into understanding this declining alcohol trend among Indian men.

Here’s what the study says:

One of the notable research that found a reduction in alcohol consumption by Indian men was published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine. This 2021 study analysed data from multiple National Family Health Surveys (NFHS-3 to 5).

“First, the fact that a relatively lower proportion of the Indian population is currently using alcohol compared to the previous survey years can serve as an important piece of information while delivering interventions targeted at primary prevention of alcohol use disorders (AUD),” the study stated.

But why?

Reports suggest that Indian men are drinking less alcohol due to increased awareness of its health risks, shifting societal norms, and growing emphasis on wellness. Studies suggest that campaigns highlighting the negative effects of alcohol have played a significant role in changing perceptions.

Additionally, younger generations are increasingly focused on fitness and mental well-being, leading them away from excessive drinking.

Another key finding of the study

One crucial finding of the study is the role of perceived social norms in influencing alcohol use, especially among adolescents. Researchers noted that young individuals often overestimate their peers’ alcohol consumption, which in turn impacts their drinking habits.

“Overestimation of friends’ alcohol use significantly increases the likelihood of all alcohol consumption behaviours and all alcohol-related problems. The finding of a decrease in the proportion of the Indian population with alcohol use can help develop social-norm campaigns as part of a prevention intervention,” the study added.

Contradictory trends: Alcohol use in women and underage groups

While the overall percentage of Indian men consuming alcohol has decreased, the Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2018 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighted a contradictory trend. Between 2010 and 2017, there was a 38% increase in per capita alcohol consumption among individuals aged 15 and older in India.

“In fact, the total alcohol per capita consumption among drinkers in India is high at 18.3 litres and 6.6 litres of pure alcohol, respectively, for men and women (aged ≥15 years),” the 2021 study stated.

This suggests that while casual or occasional drinking may be on the decline, those who do consume alcohol are drinking more heavily than before.

While Indian men saw a dip in alcohol consumption, the study highlighted an increase in alcohol use among women in nine states across India.
