Stellantis Layoffs Continue: Global Automobile Giant Cuts More Jobs at Michigan Plant Amid Intense External Market Condition

Sterling Heights, September 30: Stellantis, a Netherlands-based multinational automobile giant has reportedly laid off hunreds of employees from its Michigan plant and planning to lay off more in coming times. Last month, the Stellantis layoffs were expected to affect 2,450 workers in Michigan as the company ended the production of Ram 1500 Classic trucks. The latest round has reportedly has affected supplement workers as well.

According to a report by Chicago Tribune, Stellantis NV is expected to lay off 191 workers from Sterling Heights plant, also known as SHAP, by the end of this week. Out of these affected, 177 are the supplement workers and 14 are full-time employees with lower seniority in Stellantis. The automotive manufacturer also notified supplement workers of Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio about their termination early this week. The Stellantis layoffs will reportedly be carried out in two parts – the supplement workers would be terminated from October 1, 2024 who were hired for covering the increased summer vacation usage.

Toledo Assembly Complex is engaged in manufacturing Jeep Wrangler SUV and Gladiator pickup trucks. The company informed these workers about their termination; however has yet to disclose how many were affected so far.  Further, the report highlighted that the Stellantis layoffs will continue affecting the full-time employees as a part of “indefinite layoffs” plan across its footprint.

Stellantis spokesperson Ann Marie Fortunate said that the company was in “full execution mode” as it struggled to protect itself from extreme external market conditions and production low-cost vehicles for the customers. In October, the Stellantis layoffs at SHAP would reportedly create more openings for the senior workers leaving the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in October 2024 when the company ends the production of Ram 1500 Classic trucks. The Warren workers were warned about massive layoffs which would likely impact 2,450 workers; however union officials said it would affect around 1,600 employees.
