Border Collie runs all the way around edge of field to get ball

Border collies are undeniably one of the most intelligent working breeds – from herding sheep, to even learning names of their toys.

And while some dogs might enjoy a quick game of fetch, others don’t realise when their owners have thrown the ‘invisible’ ball.

But Tipsy goes the extra mile – quite literally – to chase her beloved ball.

When her owner Jessi Burk, from London, in Canada, showed Tipsy her ball, she stopped dead in her tracks, paws poised and ready.

Jessi threw the orange and blue ball over the other side of the sheep fence, and Tipsy – who’s been trained not to go over or through the fence – set off in a sprint in the opposite direction.

Taking the long way around, Tipsy ran through the gate, down the path and around the trees to retrieve her ball, ready for another throw.

Other dog owners have shared how their dogs would have behaved in the same situation – and they’re vastly different to Tipsy’s marathon around the farm.

One said: “My malinois would simply bulldoze the fence.”

Another added: “My Doberman would stand at the fence and bark at the ball… for hours.”

One suggested tying string to the ball and “pull it back when it almost gets there” to see if the collie would run all the way back around.

The two-year-old dog isn’t the only sheepdog to offer the internet a good giggle in recent months, either.

Lucy Jones’ short-coated border collie is a talented herding dog, but had everyone in stitches after ‘pulling the wool’ over their eyes.

In a TikTok video viewed nearly a million times, the collie sits perfectly still in the sheep barn, surrounded by his woolly workmates.

But the dog is wrapped up in sheared sheep wool with just his little head poking out, hoping that no-one will notice that he’s an imposter.

And elsewhere, farm dog Marshall loves his job so much, he herds whatever he can get his paws on – including his favourite football.

His owner, Lisa Alekna, shared an adorable video of the dog stalking a ball in the garden whilst patiently awaiting for instructions from the shepherdess.

She instructed him to ‘walk up’ and ‘stand’ as Marshall continued creeping towards the target.

The farmer explained to Marshall’s TikTok viewers that the clever dog would ignore commands he didn’t want to do, until Lisa offered him a better instruction.
