Sony BBC Earth’s Planet Earth III Review: Spectacular Visuals and Storytelling Abound in Wildlife Series Narrated by Sir David Attenborough (LatestLY Exclusive)

Planet Earth, Sony BBC Earth’s marquee wildlife television mini-series, returns with the third season on July 29, 2024. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the series is a must-watch for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Attenborough, a legendary biologist, nature historian and writer, has been the go-to person for wildlife documentaries and films. His interest and expertise add a natural ease to his narration, thereby adding to the watching experience of viewers. In Planet Earth III, Attenborough continues with his gentle style of voiceover and is equally pleasant when he appears on camera.

The third season premieres almost 20 years after the first and original Planet Earth series was telecast on the BBC. Planet Earth III itself has been in the making for five years, including the restrictive period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The eight-part TV mini-series was filmed in 43 countries and across six continents. The breathtaking shots of Planet Earth III were covered in 134 individual shoots, out of which 50 shoots were managed remotely due to the travel restrictions in the lockdown. Spectacular Cinematography and Storytelling in ‘Planet Earth III’

The production of the third season of Planet Earth focussed on using new technology to film the ground-breaking series. The latest equipment, including high-speed cameras, deep-sea submersibles and lightweight drones were employed to capture magnificent marine life and the forests. The result is spectacular and something that should be viewed on a big TV screen rather than on OTT.

Attenborough in his soothing voice tells the little story of several species within each episode of Planet Earth III. The series also covers how climate change and evolution have affected nature, wildlife and the ecosystem. For instance, the little Raine Island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, where between 20,000 to 1,00,000 female Olive Ridley Turtles travel to nest their eggs, may be submerged in a few years, if climate change and odd tides come into place.

Planet Earth III shows the female Olive Ridley Turtles on Raine Island and the difficulties they face in getting back into the ocean once they lay their eggs. It is heartening to see in the aftershots, how the camera crew helps some turtles stuck between rocks to pop back into the sea water. Towards the end of Episode 1 of Planet Earth III, it is heart-warming to see Sir David Attenborough share a personal film he had shot of Ridley turtles when he was just 31. The black and white clips from his film reveal his interest in wildlife and nature dating back to his younger days. Dynasties Review: David Attenborough’s Educative Narration on Endangered Wild-Life Is Matched With Aesthetic Visuals.

Oscar-Winning Hans Zimmer’s Score in ‘Planet Earth III’

Planet Earth III not only uses its years of footage with good editing techniques to tell a compelling story but also background music to effect. These are akin to a movie and enhance the storytelling by leaps and bounds. The music by Oscar Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer along with Jacob Shea and Sara Barone makes the experience of watching Planet Earth III cinematic.
