Vehicle production in China remained in a steep downturn in the first 20 days of August as the global semiconductor chip shortage continues, data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers this week show.

Output at 11 key auto manufacturing groups plunged 34 percent to around 707,000 vehicles from a year earlier during the first several weeks of the month, the industry group said.

Production of light vehicles such as sedans, crossovers, SUVs, multipurpose vehicles to minibuses fell 29 percent while output of commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks nosedived 44 percent.

CAAM didn’t reveal production volume for other light vehicles or commercial vehicles in the 20-day period.

The 11 company groups include nearly all foreign automakers that produce locally as well as China’s major domestic manufacturers.

China’s vehicle production and sales declined for the third straight month in July.

Vehicle output industrywide slumped 16 percent to 1.86 million last month while new-vehicle sales dropped 12 percent to 1.86 million, according to CAAM.
