Second man charged over alleged $20m Newcastle drug import after diver’s death

Police investigating the alleged smuggling operation and the 31-year-old Brazillian’s death arrested a 20-year-old man in Tweed Heads yesterday.

He was charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and large commercial drug supply when he went to the local police station.

Borges is believed to have travelled to Australia after allegedly being hired by drug smugglers to retrieve the cocaine from a ship at the port.

Police said he was wearing highly-technical diving gear, including equipment that doesn’t emit bubbles, and was found surrounded by bricks of cocaine.

The 20-year-old has been refused bail and will appear in court later today.

He remains before the courts.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
