Ryan Gosling Birthday: Did You Know ‘Barbie’ Star Once Played a Superhero in a Short TV Movie Also Starring Steve Carell? (Watch Video)
Ryan Gosling, one of Hollywood’s most remarkable actors (and someone long overdue for an Oscar), celebrates his 44th birthday on November 12, 2024. Born in 1980 in Ontario, Canada, Gosling first stepped into the spotlight as a child actor on Disney Channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club. As an adult, he shifted towards more dramatic roles in films such as The Notebook, Half Nelson, Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines, and Blade Runner 2049, and getting acclaim for the same. However, his ventures into comedy, including Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Nice Guys, and Barbie, have also been widely loved and appreciated. Over the years, rumours have circulated about Marvel Studios approaching the Oscar-nominated actor to play Ghost Rider in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project. However, nothing substantial has emerged from these rumours. But did you know that Ryan Gosling has already portrayed a ‘superhero’ before, albeit in a lesser-known project?
Enter The Unbelievables (1999), a pilot for a superhero-themed comedy show that was ultimately turned into a short television movie. The story centred around a group of retired superheroes and villains who had left their extraordinary careers behind to settle in the suburbs (could this have inspired The Incredibles?).
While Gosling was too young at the time to play a retired superhero, he portrayed Josh, the son of a superhero who has his own superpowers but uses them for trivial purposes. The Unbelievables also featured a pre-fame Steve Carell, long before his comedic partnership with Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love. The cast included Tim Curry, Corbin Bernsen, and Mike Starr, among others, and was directed by Ed Solomon, known for writing Men in Black, Charlie’s Angels, and Now You See Me. Although this unaired pilot never developed into a full series, it did not impede Ryan Gosling’s career. He moved on to roles on the big screen, starting with a supporting part in Remember the Titans (2000), before taking on more serious roles that solidified his reputation. The Notebook, in particular, catapulted him to global stardom. BTW, did you know that he also played Hercules in a series called Young Hercules?
