Rajasthan: Twins Born in Bikaner’s Nokha Town With Plastic-Like Skin, Suffer From Genetic Disorder Called Harlequin-Type Ichthyosis
Jaipur, November 8: In what can be said to be a unique case of childbirth, two twins in Rajasthan’s Bikaner were reportedly born with a rare condition which allegedly gave their skin a plastic-like appearance and texture. Notably, the twins were born to a woman in Bikaner’s Nokha town. After their birth, both the twins were transferred to PBM Hospital in Bikaner owing to the severity of their condition.
While the twins are said to be in stable condition, it is reported that they have been diagnosed with a rare disease called Harlequin-type ichthyosis, which is a rare genetic disorder, reports News18. Doctor Vishesh Chaudhary said that both the children are healthy and have skin tearing in multiple areas. He said that the Harlequin-type ichthyosis condition causes children, especially newborns, to be born with underdeveloped eyes and without skin.┬аRajasthan Shocker: Body of 19-Day-Old Missing Baby Boy Found Inside Water Tank in Neem Ka Thana District; Murder Case Registered.
The doctor also said that children born with this rare genetic disease have a mortality rate of up to 50 per cent while stating that these infants often survive only for a week. Doctor Chaudhary further said that this is probably the first case in the country as the disease is very rare. “One living child is born in three to five lakh children,” he said.
The incident came to light when a woman in Bikaner gave birth to twins nearly two months ago. The twins are a baby boy and a baby girl, with the boy weighing 1.5 kilograms and the girl weighing 1.53 kilograms. Speaking of the rare disease, doctor Vishesh said that children who are afflicted with this condition have a layer of hardened skin that encases their bodies. Dr Vishesh Chaudhary said that the rare condition arises due to a genetic defect inherited from the parents, which results in the child being born with a plastic-like layer covering their body. He also said that a child can be born with ichthyosis if the chromosomes of both parents carry a specific genetic mutation. The rare condition is known to cause a hardened layer of skin to form, which could tear and even cause unbearable pain.
