Pune and its surrounding areas are expected to have cloudy skies with chances of light rains for the next few days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said this will result in a dip in the maximum temperature for the next few days.

The IMD has alerted about a western disturbance (moisture-bearing winds from the Mediterranean Sea which cause rains in the north and northeast part of the country) as well as a cyclonic circulation over western Rajasthan and its neighbourhood, which exists 1.5 km above mean sea level. Similarly, a north-south trough/wind discontinuity exists over the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of the state, the IMD said. As a result of this, parts of central Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are expected to witness light rains and cloudy sky.

Senior scientists from the IMD said the wind discontinuity line would affect isolated areas or districts of Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. This effect would result in very light to light rains associated with thunder and lightning, as well as very strong winds, for a short period.

On the other hand, Pune and its nearby areas are expected to report thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds, especially during afternoon and evening hours. The IMD said that these activities would increase between April 6 and April 8 with light to moderate rains in isolated areas.

Over the last few years, IMD has issued forecasts for the hot season (March-June). The first forecast issued in March has warned about a hotter than usual summer with heatwaves expected in many parts of the country.

Accordingly, for April, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana are expected to report heatwave conditions. The heatwave conditions are likely to persist for two to six days in April, the IMD said.
