A retired police officer and his wife were killed after the motorcycle they were riding on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway was hit by a dumper truck on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Ashok Martand Kale (74) and Varsha (65), residents of Kasba Peth in Pune. Kale had retired as an assistant sub-inspector from the Maharashtra police.
The accident took place around 12.30pm when Kale was driving his motorcycle with his wife riding pillion. They were on the way to their native village. While taking a right turn near Kesnand Phata, a dumper truck hit their motorcycle and knocked it down. The truck continued to drag them for a distance, fatally injuring the elderly couple.
Senior inspector Gajanan Pawar, in charge of the Lonikand police station, said, “We have detained the driver of the dumper truck. The couple were on their way to visit their farm in their village. After his retirement from the police department, Kale had started looking after his farm.”
