Pune: Medical student dies after jumping from terrace of Sassoon Hospital

In a suspected case of suicide, a medical student died hours after she jumped from the terrace of the Sassoon General Hospital building in Pune Wednesday morning.

The police have identified the deceased as Aditi Dalbhanjan, 21, a first-year student of the MBBS course at the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy (BJ) Government Medical College, to which the Sassoon General Hospital is affiliated.

The incident took place around 9.30 am Wednesday, the police said. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone 2) Smartana Patil said, “Our primary investigation suggests that the deceased student was under stress for the last few days due to issues related to her studies. According to her family, she had also been receiving counselling support and treatment for this.”

DCP Patil further said, “On Wednesday morning, her father dropped her at the college for a practical examination around 9.30 am. She went to the terrace on the fourth floor and jumped. She sustained multiple critical injuries and was admitted to the hospital. She succumbed to her injuries a couple of hours later. We have launched a probe into the suspected case of suicide.”
