Pune conservancy worker who asked for salary molested, beaten up; 1 held

A 42-year-old female conservancy worker belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) community in Pune was Tuesday allegedly molested and brutally beaten up by her employerтАЩs brother. The man also hurled casteist slur at the woman when she went to ask him her salary which was not paid to her for the past three months, the police said.

The Maharashtra Police have arrested the 23-year-old accused identified as Arshad Kamal Khan based on a complaint filed at Nigdi police station in Pune.

The incident took place at a commercial complex in Akurdi where the brother of the accused man owns transport service, said an officer. The woman works at his shop as a conservancy staffer.

As per the womanтАЩs complaint, the brother of the accused had not paid her salary for three months. тАЬFor the last few days, the accused had been manning the shop instead of his brother. A day before the incident, the woman asked the accused for her salary. He told her to come on Tuesday morning. When she approached him on Tuesday morning, the man picked up an argument with her and brutally beat her up in the face which left her bleeding profusely. During the attack, the accused allegedly molested her and also hurled casteist slurs at her,тАЭ said an officer.

A video of the attack was circulated on social media and phone messenger platforms.

The police filed a First Information Report (FIR) under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The police have also invoked Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to voluntarily causing hurt, outraging modesty and intentional insult.
