PMC to start weekly water cuts in Pune from May 18

As declared, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would begin once-a-week water cut on May 18 (Thursday) across the city till the water storage in the dams increases during monsoon.

“It is necessary to introduce water cuts in the city considering the weather prediction by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the existing storage of water in dams. Thus, the water cut every Thursday is being started from now,” said Annirudha Pawaskar, chief engineer and in charge of the civic water supply department.

He said the water supply will be restored on Friday which might lead to supply taking place slowly and in less pressure.

NCP leader and former leader of the opposition Dipali Dhumal has urged the civic administration to ensure that the residents get water once the supply is restored on Friday.

“The experience has been very bad once the water supply is restored on the day after the water cut. It takes a few days to bring the water supply to a normal pace. The PMC administration should take utmost care that no area suffers,” Dipali Dhumal said.

The PMC has installed an air valve to ensure that there are no technical problems attached to the restoration of the water supply in the city.

“If water does not reach on time in some localities, then the PMC should provide it through tankers. Meanwhile, the administration is also working on introducing more restrictions on the use of potable water. It has decided to ban the use of water for construction activities, washing centres and gardening. The treated water from the sewage treatment plant will be supplied for construction and gardening purpose,” Dhumal said.
