NEW DELHI: Seeking the cooperation of all to make India’s G20 presidency a success, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at an all-party meeting on Monday that teamwork was key for hosting such events which bring benefits for the country.
“The G20 presidency would help showcase parts of India beyond the conventional big metros, thus bringing out the uniqueness of each part of our nation,” he said.
Home minister Amit Shah and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman made brief interventions whereas a detailed presentation encapsulating aspects of India’s G20 priorities was also made.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated the PM while noting that it is not the first time India is hosting a big summit, recalling the NAM summit which was attended by over 100 countries in 1983, and the CHOGM summit in November 1983, attended by 42 countries. Importantly, Kharge said that since China is a member of G20, PM shoulduse his influence to push China to end its occupation inside the Indian borders.
Thosepresent during the meeting also included Union minister Rajnath Singh, S Jaishankar, Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi, Bhupender Yadav and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.
Highlighting the large number of visitors who would be coming to India during India’s G20 presidency, the PM took note of the potential for promoting tourism and boosting the local economies of the venueswhere G20 meetings would be organized.
CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the success of India’s declared objectives of the G20 presidency — implementation of ‘One Earth-One Family-One Future’ depended on the government acknowledging that none of these ideas can be achieved through the imposition of uniformity, but only through the recognition of a global family where “social pluralities are celebrated by treating all diversities onbasis of equality and dignity”.
About the various issues concerning India, Kharge said that the country should use its host status to push for a law that does not allow fugitives to find safe havens outside after committing corruption in India; leverage the position for seeking compensation for India as also the developing world on climate change as recently agreed; end the long wait of 900 days for US visas for Indians by talking to USA andpush for ending of financial support by some countries to terrorist organisations.
G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies. India officially assumed the G20 presidency on December 1. The country is expected to host over 200 preparatory meetings across the country beginning this month. The next G20 Leaders’ Summit at the level of heads of state or governments is scheduled to be held on September 9 and10 next year in New Delhi.
