NEW DELHI: Amid speculations of the New Parliament Building becoming functional soon, PM Narendra Modi on Thursday made a surprise visit and took stock of the facilities and arrangements in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. During his second such visit PM interacted with the construction workers at the site.
Sources said the entire four-storeyed project having 65,000 sq ft built up area will be completed by the end of next month. “Everything will be in place by April-end. All interiors are complete and the works are getting finishing touches. The progress is more than 95%,” said a source. While the government will take a call on the inauguration of the new building and both the Houses, officials said the new LS and RS will be ready for holding the monsoon session.
Accompanied by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and housing and urban affairs secretary Manoj Joshi, the PM spent nearly one-and-a-half hours taking stock of the ongoing works. Sources said the PM took stock of the details of the electric supply, amenities, offices for ministers and the parliamentarians, besides security arrangements.
Officials said all facilities including the audio visual system and other services are functional and the regular drills are being conducted.
While the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is executing the Parliament building project, the culture ministry has taken up the works of interiors such as paintings and other works.
The new Lok Sabha chamber with a “peacock” theme will have provision for 888 seats, 60% more than that of the existing one. The new Rajya Sabha chamber designed on the “lotus theme” can accommodate 384 members, nearly 57% more than the current one.
