Perth mother’s pleas for help go unanswered as she lives with mould

A Perth mother says she has been living in a mould-infested house for years.

Madeline Gregory has been living in her Marangaroo public home for four years, which has ceilings coming down and consistent plumbing problems in addition to the mould.

Gregory’s three children, all under 10, also live in the home and she’s desperately tried to get the Department of Communities to make repairs.

“It’s just not good enough and my daughters deserve better than that,” Gregory told 9News.

“They deserve a good healthy bedroom to sleep in.”

“When you report these things, they refuse to fix it and then they refuse to even recognise that it’s here.”

The single mum said the conditions are so bad it has impacted her family’s health.

Doctors agree with her, with medical certificates stating: “Madeline and her family are always sick because their home is… full of black mould.

“Madeline and her children have been unwell for many weeks… please help and remove the black mould,” the certificate said.

Gregory said she has tried to get the Department of Communities to replace her ceiling for months but her pleas went unanswered.

When 9News put Gregory’s claims to the Department of Communities, a spokesman said there was no evidence her ceilings were afflicted by mould but it would carry out some maintenance on the home.

Three days after an inquiry from 9News, contractors arrived to rip out parts of the ceiling and replace it.

The tradies told 9News it did appear mould was present.

“He actually said to me if you’re exposed to black mold, as much as what we (were) before the ceilings were done, it can actually slowly kill you,” Gregory said.

The Department of Communities said it is not seeking alternative accommodation for Gregory and her family at this time.

The department said the ceiling was replaced to remediate Gregory’s concerns.
