Paul McCartney Reveals His Last Conversation With John Lennon And Pick The Best Song He Ever Wrote

Paul McCartney is looking back on his incredible career.

On Thursday, the former Beatles singer sat down with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show to talk about his career, and admitting to having had a testy relationship with the late John Lennon

тАЬThatтАЩs true, but IтАЩd swap it all out for him to be alive,тАЭ he said. тАЬSometimes youтАЩd get annoyed back, but not often тАж YouтАЩd just go, тАШThatтАЩs JohnтАУwhat a d**k.тАЩтАЭ

He continued, тАЬAfter the breakup of the Beatles, there were some very sad moments for me in there. You would get really down and, you know, IтАЩm sure I cried a few times going, тАШWhat the fuck?тАЩ тАж тАШWhy did we have to get like this?тАЩтАЭ

Remembering one of their final conversations, McCartney said the two reconnected over the bread shortage that had been going on in the U.K. in the тАЩ70s.

тАЬI was baking bread and got quite good at it, so when I heard John was doing it, it was great тАж we could just talk about something so ordinary,тАЭ he recalled. тАЬIt was really nice, and I was so glad that we got back to that relationship that we always had when we were kids.тАЭ

McCartney also revealed that he considers тАЬI Saw Her Standing ThereтАЭ to be one of, if not┬аthe, best song he ever wrote.

Looking back, he remembers the original version of the lyric┬атАЬShe was just 17 / You know what I meanтАЭ was actually тАЬNever been a beauty queen,тАЭ but he realized it didnтАЩt work after playing the song for Lennon.

тАЬI was like тАШOops, this is not good,тАЩтАЭ McCartney said.┬атАЬYears later, I was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Neil Young was there тАж and I told him that story. He was playing that night тАж and he did the song and he used that line, of course. He was the only one to ever use that line, I think.тАЭ

Also during the interview, McCartney explains why he was originally hesitant about bringing тАЬYesterdayтАЭ to The Beatles.

тАЬIt was a little bit embarrassing. I didnтАЩt want to be the guy whoтАЩs out on the stage on his own because thereтАЩs a lot of comfort being in a group of mates,тАЭ he said.┬атАЬWhen I brought it in it was just me, solo guitar, and that was it. The guys just said, тАШWell, we canтАЩt put drums on that тАж and the one guitar is doing enough.тАЩ┬а[We] said, тАШNo we canтАЩt put that out, weтАЩre a rock group.тАЩ We liked it and stuff, but it wasnтАЩt a big feature of our stage act.тАЭ
