Giving its whole-hearted thumbs up to the SC judgment on the appointment of CEC and ECs, Congress Thursday said the judgment should be extended to the selection of the head of the Enforcement Directorate, in which the influence of the government is overwhelming. Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi called the judgment “timely”, as he alleged that Modi government has been among the worst offenders in violation of electoral safeguards. “It gives the EC an important reminder of its role in maintaining and sustaining our democracy,” he said.
He warned that the government should not bring a law in Parliament to overturn the SC judgment, saying any such move will be strongly opposed by the opposition. Singhvi further said that the court order comes into effect immediately, and the present EC officials should resign.
