The first snow fell in Perisher overnight, dusting the popular ski resort in white while bringing cold and windy weather across parts of the state.
Winter has arrived early this year with the first snow falling at ski resorts.
Ten centimetres of snow fell in the Perisher Valley overnight, after the resort received 15cm in the days prior, about a month earlier than the average first powder of the season.
Snow showers are forecast to continue throughout the weekend, with temperatures expected to dip to as low as -7C on Sunday morning.
Despite recent warm weather, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said the quick change of weather is common around this time of year and is expected to bring a “nice dusting of snow” to popular ski fields.
“There is a cold air mass moving through, with a second-pulse heading through Sydney,” a spokesperson said.
“[It is] going to hang around for a few days as we have a ridge of high pressure.”
BOM said the cold front had been forecasted for a few days and was moving fast from the south bringing with it a cool, dry wind.
The weather is expected to last until the middle of next week with temperatures in Sydney predicted to be four to five degrees colder, which is considered “well below average”.
Sydney didn’t escape the chilly conditions with a maximum temperature of just 18C on Saturday.
But on Sunday there would be widespread frosts across NSW in the morning.
Across most of Australia temperatures were around two to eight degrees colder than average, according to senior meteorologist Dean Narramore.
“Pretty much all of the country bar Western Australia are experiencing below average temperatures,” Mr Narramore said.
