Navi Mumbai: In a major crackdown on illegal constructions, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) conducted demolition drives in Koparkhairane and Nerul after property owners failed to comply with issued notices.
The operation was carried out under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, with guidance from Additional Commissioner (2) Dr. Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Mr. Bhagwat Doiphode.
During an inspection at Plot No. 84, Sector 19, Nerul, an unauthorized extension measuring approximately 6.10m × 4.10m was found in the parking area of a property owned by Parul Bharadwaj.

Following this, a notice was issued under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, on March 11. However, the owner failed to remove the illegal structure within the given time frame.
Subsequently, a demolition drive was carried out under the supervision of Nerul division’s Assistant Municipal Commissioner and Division Officer Jayant Javadekar, along with Junior Engineer Sanjay Sontakke.
“The operation involved 10 laborers, 2 gas cutters, 2 breakers, and 2 heavy hammers, with police personnel ensuring security. Additionally, a penalty of Rs 10,000 was imposed on the violator,” a NMMC officer said.
A similar action was taken in Koparkhairane, where an illegal structure belonging to Sadhana Rajendra Navale at S.S. Type, Room No. 733, Sector 18, was demolished. The property owner had been served a notice on February 25, under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, but no action was taken to remove the structure.
As part of the drive, authorities also cleared belongings of homeless individuals residing on the footpath near the Koparkhairane railway station parking area and transferred them to the dumping yard.
The Koparkhairane demolition drive was led by Assistant Commissioner Vasant Mundavare and Junior Engineer Chandrakant Dhotre, along with other officials and municipal police personnel. The operation was executed with the help of six laborers, two electronic hammers, a pickup van, and a gas cutter.
The NMMC has made it clear that strict action against unauthorized constructions will continue in the coming days. Authorities have urged residents and property owners to adhere to municipal regulations and remove illegal structures to avoid penalties and forced demolition.
