Kyoto, October 20: Japan-based tech giant Nidec Corporation, formerly known as Nippon Densen Corporation, recently announced to one of its subsidiaries that it suffered a ransomware attack. The company said the data leakage was caused by unauthorised access to its Vietnamese subsidiary last month. The Nidec Precision Vietnam Corporation (NPCV) had suffered unauthorised access from external criminal groups who stole documents and files from the company’s server.
After the Nidec Precision data breach, the attackers demanded ransom in exchange for the materials they had stolen. The company refused to accept the demands of these criminal groups, which led them to post the documents and files on the dark web website and allow third parties to access them. On August 5, 2024, the external criminal group informed Nidec Precision that they gained unauthorised access to the NPCV’s network, stole the documents and files from the server, and then began demanding the “ransom”. The tech giant said no damage was witnessed since the documents and files were compromised due to the cyberattack.
The tech company said that the other subsidiaries of Nidec Corporation were safer and did not have any data breaches. However, the company confirmed that a total of 50,694 files were compromised by August’s cyberattack, and they included critical information about the stakeholders, Nidec Precision. The data leaks included information about NPCV’s internal documents, business partners’ letters, green procurement-related documents, labour safety and hygiene policies, and details about business transactions and contracts.
The Nidec Precision said in its official blog post that it alerts the relevant individual business partners of their leaked information. The tech company said that the cybercriminals might have illegally acquired the IDs and passwords of the users of NPCV’s general domain accounts and then stole the files that were only accessible through those account’s authority. The company took countermeasures by scanning all the possible electronic terminals, resetting passwords, reviewing the server’s access authority, and suspending the VPN device that likely caused the cyberattack.
