SRINAGAR: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday arrested a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operative who allegedly passed on sensitive security information, especially on movement of security forces in J&K, to his Pakistan-based handlers.
Incriminating documents seized from Mohd Ubaid Malik of Kupwara reinforced his involvement in terror activities while being in constant touch with a JeM commander in Pakistan, an NIA spokesman said.
“The arrest is part of NIA’s crackdown against conspiracies hatched by proscribed terrorist organisations across the border to destabilise India through attacks in J&K,” the NIA spokesman said.
Malik was arrested in a case of June 2022 in which the central agency had carried out raids at over a dozen locations in J&K on Saturday as part of a sweeping drive to dismantle the terror network.
Besides Kupwara, the raids were conducted in Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Awantipora, Anantnag, Handwara, and Poonch. The action was aimed at various terror outfits, including cadres of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and scores of overground workers, according to NIA officials.
The June 2022 case pertains to alleged conspiracies — hatched physically and over the internet — for attacks with sticky bombs, magnetic bombs, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and small arms.
The explosives are delivered by drones and assembled locally for the attacks, mainly on minorities and security forces, NIA officials said.
