More exposure sites expected in NSW with Joh Bailey salon, Lyfe Cafe of significant concern

A busy Chinese restaurant in Sydney’s Barangaroo has been revealed as a close connection to a known infection after the city’s Covid-19 outbreak escalated on Friday.

Another 12 venues were also added to the exposure list as 22 new cases were reported and the NSW capital was plunged into a week-long lockdown.

Anyone who visited the Lotus Barangaroo restaurant and sat either inside or outside on Sunday June 20 between 12.30pm and 3pm is considered a close contact of a known case and must get tested and isolate immediately for 14 days regardless of the result.

A dozen extra venues were also added on Friday afternoon with those who visited considered casual contacts, including a BWS in Cecil Hills, Woolworths in Randwick and David Jones in Burwood. Nearly a dozen train journeys were also added as casual contacts.

The full list and times are detailed below.

The update comes after a popular Bondi Cafe was linked to three positive cases out of the 22 announced on Friday.

The Lyfe Cafe in Bondi was added to the exposure sites list late on Thursday night, with chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant explaining the cafe was linked to a case at the Joh Bailey hair salon.

“Investigations have found a person who was infectious on June 15 and 16 was the source of the infection for the Joh Bailey hairdressing in Double Bay, the Fresh Nails salon in Westfield Bondi Junction, and the Lyfe Cafe in Bondi,” she said.

“A close contact of this person then introduced the infection to the Tropicana Cafe.”

Dr Chant said she was “significantly concerned” for more than 900 patrons and staff at Joh Bailey in Double Bay where at least five Covid-19 cases have been linked.

Chief health officer Kerry Chant said the Joh Bailey salon in Double Bay was of particular concern due to “at least” three staff members who worked while unknowingly infectious, with two cases confirmed among clients so far.

“I expect more cases to be detected over the coming days, and I’m urging all clients and staff between June 15 and 23 to be tested and quarantine,” Dr Chant said.

“We’re concerned (that) the over 900 clients that attended, or potentially are contacts, may acquire the infection.

“We have reached out to those individuals and … when we see the cases over coming days, they’re all in isolation.”

Dr Chant said she was also concerned that a case identified on Thursday attended two gyms while infectious – Fitness First Platinum in Bondi Junction on June 21 and Fitness First Spring St on June 22.

“People who attended (those gyms) should check the affected times, get tested and quarantine as directed,” Dr Chant said.

A raft of new exposure sites were listed late on Thursday night.
