Modi Surname Remarks Case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi convicted and gets two years jail in тАШModi remarksтАЩ case | India News

SURAT: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been convicted under IPC sections 499 and 500, that deal with defamation and sentenced two years imprisonment by the court of chief judicial magistrate H H Varma here on Thursday. Gandhi was released on bail by the court and the court gave 30 days time to appeal the verdict in higher court.

тАЬWe demanded maximum punishment in the case as it was violation of law by an elected political leader who is involved in process to form law. The court awarded two years punishment and released Gandhi on bail with 30 days time to appeal the verdict in higher court,тАЭ said Ketan Reshamwala, lawyer of BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

The case was filed under IPC 499 and 500, against Gandhi for his alleged тАЬhow come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?тАЭ remarks on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA from Surat West and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi in April 2019. The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad made the alleged remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, leaders of state Congress body remained present in the court with Gandhi. Congress workers were camping on the route from airport and shouted slogans to support Gandhi. The Congress leader arrived at airport from Delhi in morning and directly reached Surat District and Sessions Court. After completing the court procedure Gandhi returned to airport.
