NEW DELHI: Reiterating his “Sabka sath, sabka vikash, sabka vishwas, sabka prayas” mantra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the policies and efforts of the Indian government to serve poor, backward classes and deprived see no discrimination.
“When I tell people to walk on the path duty (kartavya), many tell me in return, I just talk about duties, and not rights. Today, India is carrying out reforms not out of compulsion, but out of conviction. Uplifting the poor and marginalised has become our government’s top priority,” said PM Modi, addressing an event to mark the 200th birth anniversary celebrations of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati in New Delhi on Sunday.
The government has organised year-long celebrations to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of the social reformer and Arya Samaj founder.
The PM said the path shown by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati instills hope in crores of people at a time when the world is engulfed in violence.
“Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati launched a strong campaign against social discrimination, untouchability and many such distortions, besides becoming a voice for women empowerment in India. Our government is also following his path. Today the daughters of the country are flying Rafale fighter planes,” he said, adding India is also showing way to the world in the field of environment, and chairing G20 is a matter of pride.
“Today, the country is confident that it will bring modernity and strengthen its heritage. Today, the country is calling everyone to have ‘pride in our heritage’. Maharishi Dayanand ji revived the understanding of Vedas in the society. Vedas have defined the path of living … for Indians dharma is duty, not just religious rituals,” said PM Modi.
“This year world is celebrating the International Year of Millets. But India has always known the importance of millets, which we call Sree Anna. That is why, we have always been giving Sree Anna as the last offering during yagnas, says PM Modi.
Born in 1824, Saraswati worked to counter the then prevalent social inequities. Arya Samaj has played a key role in cultural and social awakening of the country by its emphasis on social reforms and education, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.
The government has been committed to celebrating social reformers and important personalities, especially those whose contributions were not given their due yet on a pan-India scale, it added.
